ONC Hails peaceful election re-run: Ballot Settles Family Rivalry as Mother-in-Law Defeats Daughter-in-Law in Nakaloke LC I Race, Mbale

Democracy prevailed in Nakaloke III, Afya Ward, after a closely watched and unique Local Council I (LC I) election contest between a mother-in-law and her daughter-in-law finally came to an end.

The election, which had previously failed twice due to disagreements and unresolved concerns among stakeholders, was successfully conducted following the intervention and monitoring efforts of the Office of the National Chairman (ONC), local leaders, and residents. The Assistant Returning Officer (ARO), who met with the ONC team, assured the community that the election would only proceed upon receiving clearance from the Electoral Commission.

When the votes were finally cast, the mother-in-law emerged victorious with 143 votes, while her daughter-in-law secured 47 votes. The outcome brought closure to a contest that had attracted significant public interest and tested the community’s commitment to democratic principles.

As the dust settles, residents have been urged to unite behind the elected leader and work together for the development of Nakaloke III. The true victory belongs not only to the winner but also to democracy, which once again proved capable of settling differences through the ballot box rather than division.
