Namisindwa District Woman MP Hon. Peace Khalayi earlier on made a passionate appeal to the government to fast-track the modernization and development of Lwakhakha Border Town, warning that poor infrastructure is denying thousands of farmers and traders the opportunity to benefit from regional trade.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament today, Hon. Khalayi said Lwakhakha is strategically positioned to become one of Uganda’s most vibrant trade and economic hubs within the East African Community, but its potential remains constrained by inadequate road networks and insufficient market infrastructure.
She called on the government to invest in better roads leading to the border, modernize market facilities, and strengthen cross-border trade systems to unlock economic growth in Namisindwa and beyond. According to the legislator, developing Lwakhakha into a fully functional trade hub would not only uplift local communities but also strengthen Uganda’s competitiveness in regional commerce.
She expressed concern that poor roads continue to make transportation difficult and costly, leaving many farmers struggling to deliver their produce to markets. She noted that despite the district’s strong agricultural output, many residents are unable to earn the returns they deserve because of unreliable transport links.
The MP specifically appealed for the urgent upgrade of critical roads, including the Kufu–Bupoto–Magale–Bumbo Road and the Lwakhakha Road network, saying improved connectivity would boost trade, attract investment, create jobs, and improve household incomes.
She urged the government to view infrastructure development not merely as a construction project but as a catalyst for economic transformation and poverty reduction.
“When roads reach the people, development follows. When farmers access markets, families prosper. And when Lwakhakha thrives, Uganda wins.”
