Nkoma Secondary School has taken bold and decisive action to safeguard its integrity and protect learners, sending a clear message that discipline, safety, and accountability remain the foundation of its education system.

Following a widely circulated video involving a violent incident, the school administration moved swiftly to identify six Senior Two students implicated in the assault and alleged aggravated robbery of a student from Mbale Progressive School. In a rare show of transparency and responsibility, the suspects were immediately handed over to police to allow the law to take its course.

In an official letter signed by Headteacher Abubakar Kawanguzi, the school outlined the gravity of the offenses committed—ranging from fighting outside school premises and dodging classes to acts that undermined discipline and tarnished the school’s reputation. The Disciplinary Committee convened on April 15, 2026, and resolved to suspend the students, barring them from school as the Board of Governors prepares a final decision.

Addressing the school community, Deputy Headteacher Mr. Ramadan Ntege emphasized that Nkoma Secondary School will never tolerate violence, criminal behavior, or disrespect for authority. He reassured students and parents alike that the institution remains firmly committed to nurturing responsible, law-abiding citizens. He further warned that investigations are ongoing and any other individuals identified will face similar action.

Authorities have strongly backed the school’s approach. The Mbale Industrial City Division Deputy Resident City Commissioner, Hamza Banja, revealed that there had been prior concerns about indiscipline among some students, including possession of dangerous items. He urged young people to prioritize their education, warning that criminal conduct leads to serious legal consequences that can permanently affect their future.

Police, through Elgon Regional spokesperson SP Rogers Taitika, confirmed that the suspects are in custody at Nakaloke Police Station as investigations continue. He emphasized that the law applies to all individuals above 12 years, and those aged 18 and above will face full prosecution. He also commended the community for its vigilance, noting that public cooperation and video evidence were instrumental in ensuring swift arrests.

This incident, while unfortunate, has instead highlighted the strength and integrity of Nkoma Secondary School’s leadership. By acting quickly, transparently, and in partnership with authorities, the school has demonstrated its unwavering commitment to student safety and discipline—reassuring parents that their children are in a secure and well-managed learning environment.

As concerns rise over cases of student misconduct targeting personal property such as mobile phones, leaders are calling for stronger collaboration between schools, parents, and the wider community to instill discipline and guide learners toward responsible behavior.
