VJ Junior, a renowned Ugandan movie translator, says he got so emotional that tears started rolling down his face when he watched ‘Homeless to Harvard: The Liz Murray Story’.
In an interview, VJ Junior, whose real name is Marysmarts Matovu, narrated how some movies, despite their intention to inspire, will make you so emotional.
He acknowledged that the story in the Homeless to Harvard movie had tears rolling down his face because of what the little girl had to go through when she lost her parents to AIDS.
Some movies get emotional and inspirational at the same time. The movie ‘Homeless to Harvard’ got me emotional. It was about a child who lost her parents to HIV/AIDS, forcing her onto the streets.
She was smart and taught herself to the point of being admitted to Harvard University. It was so emotional, it made me cry.
About Homeless to Harvard: The Liz Murray Story
“Homeless to Harvard: The Liz Murray Story” is a 2003 American biographical drama television film directed by Peter Levin.
As a young girl, Murray lives with her sister Lisa, their drug-addicted, schizophrenic mother Jean, who has AIDS and is practically blind, and their father Peter, also an intelligent drug addict, but also has AIDS, lacks social skills, and is not conscientious.
She is removed from the home and placed into the care system as her father cannot take care of her.
At 15, she moves in with her mother, sister, and grandfather, who sexually abused her mother and her aunt. After her grandfather hits her during a fight, Liz runs away with a girl from school named Chris, who is being abused at home.
After Jean dies of AIDS, which she contracted from sharing needles during her drug-abusing years, Liz gets a “slap in the face” by her mother’s death and begins her work to finish high school, which she amazingly completed in two years, rather than the usual four.
She becomes a star student and earns a scholarship to Harvard University through an essay contest sponsored by The New York Times.
