KAMPALA – Sironko District Woman Member of Parliament, , has called for urgent government intervention to protect vulnerable communities in the Elgon region, warning that thousands of residents remain exposed to deadly landslides as the anticipated El Niño rains draw closer.
While addressing Parliament, Nabulo raised concern over the continued threat facing families living in high-risk areas of Sironko and neighboring districts. She noted that the region has endured devastating landslides for many years, resulting in the loss of lives, destruction of property, death of livestock, and the disappearance of productive farmland that sustains many households.
The legislator revealed that 1,645 identified landslide victims are still awaiting relocation despite clear signs of danger in affected areas. According to Nabulo, cracks on hillsides and settlement grounds continue to widen, signaling an increased likelihood of fresh disasters if immediate action is not taken.
She warned that the expected El Niño rains could significantly worsen the situation, as prolonged and heavy rainfall is likely to accelerate soil erosion, weaken slopes, and trigger new landslides across the mountainous region.
Nabulo commended the government for previous interventions aimed at supporting disaster-prone communities but appealed to the Rt. Hon. Prime Minister and relevant agencies to expedite the relocation process before another tragedy occurs.
She emphasized that her concerns are informed by assessments and reports from district officials who continue to monitor the affected areas and have consistently highlighted the growing risks facing residents.
She urged government to act proactively rather than react after lives have been lost, stressing that the safety of citizens must remain a national priority. According to Nabulo, timely relocation of vulnerable families will not only save lives but also safeguard livelihoods and restore hope to communities living under the constant threat of disaster.
As the rainy season approaches, residents of Sironko and the wider Elgon region are looking to government for swift and lasting solutions that will move families from danger zones to safer and more secure locations.
