Bugisu Cultural Institution Takes Umukuka’s Campaign to Schools while at Bufumbo sss, Declares War on FGM and Sexual Violence

Bufumbo, Mbale District — The Bugisu Cultural Institution has intensified its campaign against female genital mutilation (FGM), defilement, rape, and other social vices through direct engagement with learners in schools across the region.

Carrying the powerful message of His Highness the Umukuka, Jude Mike Mudoma, the spokesperson of the Bugisu Cultural Institution, Mr. Steven Masiga, today visited Bufumbo Secondary School and Bufumbo Primary School where he addressed students, teachers, and school leaders on the importance of education, child protection, and responsible citizenship.

Speaking on behalf of the Umukuka, Mr. Masiga urged learners to remain focused on their studies, describing education as the strongest weapon for transforming families, communities, and the entire Bugisu region. He emphasized that every child deserves a safe learning environment free from violence, abuse, and harmful cultural practices.

The cultural institution strongly condemned female genital mutilation, noting that the practice has no place in modern society and continues to deny many girls their right to health, education, and personal development. Learners were encouraged to become ambassadors of change by speaking out against harmful practices that affect young girls.

Mr. Masiga also delivered a firm warning against defilement and rape, calling upon parents, community leaders, religious institutions, and government agencies to work together to protect children and uphold their rights. He stressed that the future of Bugisu depends on raising a generation that is educated, disciplined, and protected from all forms of exploitation.

“The Umukuka believes that the classroom is the foundation of a stronger Bugisu. When we educate a child, we empower a family. When we protect a girl child, we protect the future of our community,” Mr. Masiga told the learners.

Students and teachers welcomed the initiative, describing it as timely and inspirational. They pledged to support efforts aimed at promoting education, safeguarding children, and eliminating harmful practices within their communities.

The message from the Umukuka was clear and powerful: “Educate Every Child, Protect Every Girl, and Build a Stronger Bugisu for Generations to Come.”
