The race for Speaker of Parliament has taken a dramatic and defining turn as Lydia Wanyoto Mutende, the gazetted Woman Member of Parliament for Mbale City, formally declared her bid — instantly reshaping a crowded seven-candidate contest into a high-stakes national showdown.
Fresh from the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa and strategic engagements in South Africa, Wanyoto returned home with unmistakable resolve. Her message was clear: leadership must be disciplined, visionary, and anchored in national interest.
While at the historic Maluku Grounds — a site etched in political memory — she stood firm and made her intentions known.
“I have accepted the endorsement. I am contesting for the Speakership. The journey begins now,” she declared to an electrified audience.
Wanyoto congratulated Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on his decisive 71% victory, describing it as a renewed national mandate for stability and continuity. She further applauded Mbale’s steadfast support for the National Resistance Movement (NRM), emphasizing that such loyalty must be matched with accountable and strategic parliamentary leadership.
